Extending Classroom Engagement with the Science of Reading

Deploy a Science of Reading curriculum During the School Day

Teaching reading at the K-3 grade level involves working with students who need to develop foundational skills and apply an explicit phonics strategy to reading content.  Our experience has shown how measurable progress in reading skills occurs with a 15 to 30-minute lesson engagement.  The number of engagements can be between three and five times per week.

Startup Reading designed a reading curriculum that rebalances the demands on the teacher.   To be concise, we use digital (video) reading lessons to deliver reading lesson content for each page in the student workbook.  The teacher decides to present lesson content to the whole class or to assign lesson content individually to each student.  In either scenario, a student has exercise assignments to complete after the lesson content presentation.

A teacher, teaching assistant, or reading coach reviews each student’s assignment and has the student read the exercises in the lesson.  We recommend a ratio of one reading coach for every 4-6 students during a 30-minute reading lesson.

The program allows flexibility regarding the number of reading coach sessions per week.  A reading coach may review the student’s work daily, or lesson assignments can be scheduled for a reading coach review every three days.

The supervising teacher establishes the level of student engagement

Kindergarten through the 3rd grade is the time to establish the foundation in reading skills

Students respond to expectations, recognition, and positive reinforcement.  Startup Reading has a cultural belief embedded in the content and structure characterized by the statement: Every student is a super reader, they just need a reading strategy with an inspirational teacher.

This Supervising Teacher oversees the student’s engagement and learning experience throughout the program.  A supervising teacher will also implement the policies and procedures for student group assignments, classroom management, and school policies.

An online program for Supervising Teacher Training is available.

A reading coach delivers a mentor type learning experience.

The Reading Coach establishes a mentor relationship with the student, outlines assignments, and reviews reading strategies during each coaching session.

A Reading Coach will generally review student’s workbook lessons and ask students to read words, phrases, or sentences in the lesson. They will review the main points and check for understanding. The Coach listens carefully to ensure students are not guessing, but are effectively using reading strategies to read correctly.

The Reading Coach also recognizes the student’s efforts and accomplishments, encouraging their sense of confidence in becoming a “Super Reader.”

Individual Student Progress over a One Month Period

Accountability is built into the Startup Reading program

A placement process determines the optimum starting point for each student.  The reading coach session includes an indication of the quality of the student’s knowledge and use of the reading skills in the lesson.  At the end of each workbook, an assessment is conducted to ensure the student is ready to move to the next book.  Student progress in reading skills can be reviewed by the individual student and aggregated at the grade level, and across a range of grades.
