Writing Camps

Writing skills are essential to communicating within our society, and it all starts with engaging young students to understand and enjoy the power of written communications. We conduct full-day academic camps during school breaks to ensure students continue to develop their foundation in writing skills for academic success.

1st-2nd Grade - Beginning Writing Camp

Information

The First Focus writing program is based on the 6+1 Traits of Writing which is an effective guide for students to express their ideas beyond the basic sentence-writing structure by showing them how to write "super sentences." Students will be encouraged to produce precise, detailed sentences containing adjectives and informative clauses that will lend themselves to a clear, topic-driven paragraph.

The lessons in the camp are designed to start with reviewing the mechanical conventions of a paragraph: the correct punctuation, grammar and spelling. Students are guided in the steps of preparing an outline (brainstorming) by making notes of ideas and then putting them in a logical order. In teaching the important traits of writing, students are guided to write clear, single focused topics, with sufficient, vibrant details to support that theme. We emphasize selecting the most vivid verbs, precise nouns and descriptive adjectives in order to paint a clear picture for the reader. Students are pleased with the outcome of an engaging and informative paragraph.
