We conduct a Free Reading Assessment to determine the current reading level demonstrated by student. We also use this time to evaluate the student's capacity to make progress using the curriculum and methodology taught by our teachers. The parent accompanying the student observes the entire assessment period and receives specific feedback on the results that were observed during the session.
The starting point depends on the age and grade of the student and we start by having the student read a series of words, to reading a sentence or passage.
We introduce a method to read words by idenifying the vowel sound using a simple Reading Code and applying the consonsant sounds to read a word. After some practice and confidence building, we give the child a range of words on the board where they can apply the Reading Code and read the word in a consistent, reliable manner. Depending on time, we may progress through to two syllable words.
At the conclusion of this 30 minute assessment, we provide the parent with the printed guidelines to continue practicing the lesson at home, and we are available to answer any questions and explain the proprietary techniques we use.
