Free Reading Assessment
First Focus Learning Systems conducts a Free Reading Assessment to determine the current reading level by a student. We also use this time to evaluate the student's capacity to make progress in reading using the Phonics Chart methodology. The parent accompanying the student observes the entire assessment period and receives specific feedback on the results that were observed during the session.
The reading assessment starts with a brief review of Chart 1 to confirm a comfortable knowledge of the letters in the alphabet followed by a brief review of Chart 2, the sounds of the consonants. Some children may not know the sounds of every consonant but they will quickly learn the sounds with the First Focus imaginary pictures for each consonant.
In the next step, we introduce the vowels and teach the vowel sounds using the First Focus Reading Code. The Code is a short song that allows children to quickly learn the vowel sounds. In the final step, we show the child how to use the "Reading Code" to begin reading single syllable words. After some practice and confidence building, we give the child a range of words on the board that they now can apply the Reading Code and read the word in a consistent, reliable manner. Depending on time, we may progress through to two syllable words.
At the conclusion of this 30 minute assessment, we provide the parent with the printed guidelines to continue practicing the lesson at home, and we are available to answer any questions and explain the proprietary techniques we use.
Please arrive 10-15 minutes in advance of the scheduled start time.
