Reading Classes

Reading is an essential skill and expectations are high for students entering kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade. We conduct small group classes to ensure students develop a foundation in reading skills for academic success.

Young 5 Reading Class

Information

The Young 5 Reading Class is designed to provide a foundation in the language arts. Young 5 students gain significant reading skills and confidence in reading single syllable words, phrases and sentences.

Students in the Young 5 Reading Class will master the consonant and vowel sounds, read long and short vowel words with the reading code, and will gradually transition to confidently reading phrases, common sight words and short sentences. Emergent readers will practice penmanship and will spell words and phrases based on their knowledge of sound-letter relationships.
The Young 5 Reading Class is conducted once per week:
Tuesdays 3:30-5:30 pm
Wednesdays 3:30-5:30 pm
Thursdays 1:30-3:00 pm - 1.5 hours

Monthly tuition is $359 for the 2 hour classes
and $269 for the 1.5 hour classes on Thursdays 1:30-3:00 pm.
Discounts are available for quarterly or annual tuition payments, and for payments by check or bank transfer.

Beginning Reading Class for Kindergarten Students

Information

The Beginning Reading Class is designed to provide a foundation in the language arts for kindergarten students. We find that children exhibit enthusiasm as they begin to read words in Chart 3 using the "Reading Code" to decode long and short vowel sounds. Students get reading practice through the First Focus "Read and See Books" which have interesting stories and pictures that are designed to reinforce reading skills taught in class.

Students in the Beginning Reading class will master the consonant and vowel sounds, confidently read long and short vowel words, and will gain confidence in reading multi-syllable words In addition, emergent readers will learn how to divide words into syllables and identify consonant digraphs and consonant blends. Students will also read short stories with purpose and understanding. Students will practice penmanship skills through activities designed to develop comprehension of written text and the spelling of words in short sentences based on their knowledge of sound-letter relationships.

1st - 2nd Grade - Intermediate Reading Class

Information

The Intermediate Reading Class extends reading skills by following four methods to read and comprehend words, phrases and sentences.

Students in the Intermediate Reading Class will master reading complex multi-syllable words embedded in appropriate grade level stories and will learn new vowel groups with non-standard phonetic sounds. They will learn to recognize and spell sight words, answer questions about the story, and practice composing basic descriptive, narrative, and compare-contrast paragraphs with sentence starters.

2nd - 3rd Grade - Advanced Reading Comprehension Class

Information

Advanced Reading Comprehension focuses on developing a student's skills in recognizing different literay genres, narrative, biographies and folk tales.

Students in the Advanced Reading Class will strengthen their comprehension, critical thinking, and writing skills. They will learn the necessary tools to identify main idea, details, author's purpose, the different points of view, and make logical inferences regarding characters, plot and conclusions. Students will sharpen their writing skills by composing paragraphs in the four major genres: narrative, descriptive, persuasive, and imaginative.
The Advanced Reading Class is conducted once per week for two hours from 3:30-5:30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays parallel to the school year ( September - May). See the Registration page for enrollment availability.
