From first learning numbers to Pre-Algebra, First Focus empowers kids with the confidence to enjoy math.
This 8 week after-school class is designed to build a strong foundation in math which will lead to higher comprehension as more difficult concepts are introduced. The class is designed to let students progress at their own pace using personalized adaptive learning on a tablet. Students begin with an assessment which generates a proficiency matrix of their strong and weak points and then worksheets are given to address any gaps before moving forward into new material. A teacher will address questions and monitor progress, ensuring that each student is working at the appropriate level.
Students who bring their own tablet can work from home during the week. If students do not have a tablet, one will be provided for them.
This class uses the Tabtor math app (www.tabtor.com) which bases its curriculum on the Common Core Standards. Each student progresses at their own pace and reports are automatically generated to show the number of correct answers and time spent on each question. The teacher uses this information to determine where a student is struggling so that lessons can be targeted directly at learning gaps. Parents may install the extension on their mobile device to receive updates on their student's progress in real time.
This class explores the concepts used to visualize addition and subtraction. Students who have a successful introduction to basic math concepts are able to establish a foundation in math.
Sometimes children are intimidated by multiplication and not sure where to start. We use an innovative, low-stress technique to help your child develop a comfortable foundation in multiplication. Our technique is fun, we set goals to achieve before moving forward to the next stage. Lesson reviews incorporate a math game. Students typically enjoy the competitive environment and have fun in the mean time.
Learning Division and its natural extension to Fractions represents a significant step in concept and practice. While multiplication tables can be learned through practice, fractions represent a completely new paradigm in the number of rules and in the complexity of the calculations.
Pre-Algebra represents a new conceptual level of math, a significant step up from findng the answer by executing a set of mathmatical expressions such as 5 x 14 or 148 ÷ 9. We review the conceptual approach to solving a prolem with an unknown number, such as 5x = 65.
